[net.games.rogue] bug in 5.3

Well, we tried using various scrolls to identify objects for which the
scrolls were not supposed to be used (ie. a weapon scroll to identify
a potion) and it doesn't work in 5.3.  Didn't we have this same dis-
cussion earlier this summer?

Careful reading of the base note is required.

	It turns out, quite handily, that scrolls of identify weapon,
armor, potion, and scroll will also identify

Rogue will *not* prompt for these items; you must supply them yourself;

A potion can only be identified by an identify potion scroll.
A ring can be identified only by an identify ring, wand, or staff scroll.
A weapon can be identified only by an identify weapon scroll.
Armor can be identified only by an identify armor scroll.

ONLY A WAND OR A STAFF CAN BE IDENTIFIED BY ANY IDENTIFY SCROLL.

It does work, rosecran -- even on uiucdcsb.  I've done it many times.

yes, and this identify feature only works for some of the identify scrolls, in
5.3

If you read a scroll of (say) identify potion, want to use it to
identify a wand, but have forgotten the letter, here's what to do:
use '*' to find out all the potions, and then start at 'a', progressing
through the alphabet but skipping all the ones you know are potions.
Eventually you'll hit on your wand. (Of course, if you have
two wands and you already know about one of them, you might
accidentally re-identify it.)

Please note that if you have NO potions then you waste the scroll on this.
I find it best to simply keep a paper inventory of wands at all times.

	I don't get it; why all the fuss?  I thought my original note
	on the bug was clear and concise enough, but perhaps not.

	Repeating:  In Rogue 5.3, any identify scroll will identify
	a wand or staff, but you will not be shown such items if you
	type "*" in response to "which one?"...therefore, take a
	*CAREFUL* inventory first.

In our 5.3 version I was able to use a scroll of identify potion
to successfully identify a staff I was carrying (when I accidently
hit the wrong key). Actually I hit a couple wrong keys and it did
object to some of them but worked when I hit a staff.
