Symptoms: (1) When environment variable DISPLAY is set, and X11 support is compiled in, any invocation of emacs attempts to use X window, i.e., either a window for GNU appears on the console or a message is returned that says X server not responding. This occurs whether or not the user is using the console. (2) when DISPLAY is not set, emacs behaves normally. This was not true with 18.51 and X10. Hardware Environment: Sun 3/60, 3/260, and 4/260 using SunOS 3.{2,5}, color graphics (/dev/cgfour0).

Since the DISPLAY environment variable points to the crurent X display that you are using, what would you have emacs do? It seems to me that if you are not using an X Display, you shouldn't have the DISPLAY environment variable set. What do you think the correct behavior should be? Louis A.
