Emacs 18.50 on Spix/68000 tags-search unburies all the buffers it looks through. This means that the buffer defaults are all wrong afterwards. Tell me, what's the current version of Gnu Emacs and what's its status? How old is the 18.50 we're running? By the way, it seems that outputting the message "Scanning file..." represents a noticeable overhead in the speed of tags-search. I usually comment it out. It also doesn't seem terribly useful to display the message about "Read only file and directory not writable" every time a file is brought in: possibly useful on successful search....
