While playing 5.3, I got these messages when I read two scrolls : Your armor is covered by a shimmering gold shield. and You feel a strange sense of loss. What do these mean and how do you use them? Thanks, Willard Korfhage -- Willard Korfhage ARPA : korfhage@ucla-ats

It is a "Rust-oleum" scroll. Once you read this, your armor will be invulnerable to auators and rust traps. The second one is, I believe, a hold monster scroll when you read it and there are no monsters around. ------------ "Death to small scaly creatures!!" ------------

No, that is not correct. The hold monster scroll would say "you hear maniacal laughter in the distance". I believe that the message "you feel a strange sense of loss" is associated with not having any armour on when you read a scroll of protect armour. Rob

<What, me worry about qualifying exams when I have a two hander?> The maniacal laughter scroll is not a hold monster, but rather the more useful SCARE monster. Strange sense of loss does indeed come from reading a hold scroll or an enchant scroll when nothing is available to enchant. Sam Midkiff {ihnp4 | pur-ee}!uiucdcs!midkiff

EVERYONE knows that "You hear maniacal laughter in the distance" comes up when you read a scare monster scroll (instead of standing on it, as proper procedure would have you do)! A hold monster says "You feel a strange sense of loss" if you read it when no monsters our present. A scare monster says "You hear maniacal laughter in the distance", if you read it. Your not supposed to read it, your supposed to stand on it. I don't know what message you receive if you read a protect armour scroll with no armor on. >No, that is not correct. The hold monster scroll would say "you hear >maniacal laughter in the distance". I believe that the message >"you feel a strange sense of loss" is associated with not having any >armour on when you read a scroll of protect armour. > Rob No, No, No....the message "you hear maniacal laughter in the distance" is for a scare monster scroll, NOT a hold monster scroll. The "you feel a strange sense of loss" is for one of the following: 1) You read a hold monster scroll and there are no monsters to hold nearby (neraby == 2-3 spaces I think). 2) You read an enchant weapon scroll and you are not wielding a weapon. * 3) You read an enchant armor scroll and you are not wearing any armor. * I'm not sure about this last one, but it would make sense. I'm pretty sure that the above is correct, although keep in mind that I can't refer to myself as a rogue expert yet....I still haven't found that damn amulet! Argh!
