They're "Teleport Away" and "Teleport To"; #1 will zap a critter
off to another location on the current level; hopefully, not a location
right next to you. #2 will zap a critter right up next to you; useful when
encountering a monster room with one wimpy monster, such as an Aquator, and
a number of other ugly uglies--zap the wimp in order to block the doorway,
and then use bow&arrow/shurikens/darts to knock off the bad guys while they're
on a diagonal, and unable to hit you.

I believe both staves always hit. (version 5.3)

The Amulet will first appear on level 26. It will keep appearing
on every level as you go down--if you're not carrying it.

I don't think 55 HP are enough to go up against a U, even with the
stated weapon, armor, and strength; I think I'd try out some of the magic
items, even unknown ones, rather than slugging it out toe-to-toe with him.
The usual bag of tricks that one would employ on a (T,G,J) are what's called
for.

Okay, in 5.3, the Scare Monster scroll generates the "maniacal
laughter" message when read; the Hold Monster scroll generates the "sense of
loss" message when read if no monsters are present; and the enchantment
scrolls, and the "rustoleum" scroll, as far as I can recall, generate NO
message if nothing's available to enchant.

Obviously this was no great insight......I won't even try to explain how
I used to use it....

I still stand by my claim that AT LEAST the enchant weapon scroll will say
"You feel a strange sense of loss" when you read it without a weapon in
your hand. I still cannot say for sure that the enchant/protect armor
scrolls do the same, but I have a feeling that they do. I'm using version 5.3 .

WRONG.......WRONG..........WRONG..........WRONG..........WRONG.......WRONG..

To put this debate to an end, once and for all, (I hope), I played
a "suicide game" just to test out this theory.....

Anyway, "a strange sense of loss" will only occur when a scare
monster scroll is read, NOT when an echant weapon scroll is read
and no armour is being read....

As for the protect/enchant armour scrolls, I never was able to find
out, but will let you all know when they do.....

last time *i* played 5.3, the strange sense of loss message comes from
hold monster, not scare monster. nonetheless, there seems to be a large
following on the net who claim the contrary. why?

Nope, its the hold monster scroll that gives that message, and yes the
enchant weapon scroll will say the same if say, you are weilding a wand
(at least thats what happened to me).

It is certainly the case that in 5.2 you experience a stange sense of
loss either (and only!) when you read an enchant weapon scroll and you
either are wielding no weapon or an item that is not recognized as a
weapon (ie a potion), or when you read a scroll of hold monster and there
are no monsters to hold. It is not the case with scare monster (which is
the maniacal laughter scroll) or when you are not wearing armor and read
an enchant armor scroll. I'm not sure what happens in the case of no
armor but it is definitely *not* the strange sense of loss.

I don't see how you're going to "put this debate to an end" when
you state wrong answers. In 5.3, you do NOT get "a strange sense
of loss" from a scroll of scare monster. I think you mean hold
monster.

Enough!!!! Could we move this discussion to net.religion???
