[net.games.rogue] identify Scrolls and Rings

45223wc@houxe.UUCP (09/25/84)

In Rogue 3.6, or whatever number the easy one is (huh - you call this
easy?), how do you find out what the rings do? Do y'all use identify
scrolls on them, or do you just put them on when about to do battle with
something and see how they work? I've tried this latter method if I
have a simple beastie to play with, but never with too tough a critter.
I had a bat take away about 20hp before I finally hit the sucker.
I guess that was a ring of - dexterity? I've found rings to be retain
strength by trying them out on Ants, but it seems to me this could be
dangerous. So do you save your identify scrolls for rings or do you
use them on other things, and if so what? Wands? Potions?
   Thanx

In rogue 5.2 and 3.6, I think that identifying rings the hard way
is one of the most fun parts of the game. In 3.6, bad rings don't
consume excess food, so it is a lot safer to try rings out. In 5.2,
I almost always try out a ring on the first level. If it's cursed,
I just start the game over. Some rings are self identifying.
An important example is the sustain strenght ring (put your
unidentified ring on whenever you see an ant, or drink an unknown
potion).

With practice you will get good at identifying rings, but it is amusing
to discover after a few levels that the ring you always wear to
(you think) increase damage, is actually "see invisible".

I save almost all my identify scrolls fr rings, but I hate to use them
on bad rings, so I like to try them out first. With a scroll of
remove curse, you can screen a couple, and then try them out.

In rogue 3.6, the following bad rings are extremely useful when
uncursed: -1, -2 strength; teleport; aggravate monster.

I generally trust that if I have two similar rings, and identify one as
cursed (of the types with + or - values), that the other is not cursed
and is safe to try. This policy usuuaallyy works...

Well, there are a number of ways to identufy SOME of the rings without
using identify scrolls. Here are some examples:

(1) regeneration : Put a ring on when your HP are NOT full and make a few
moves. If your HP increase by one per move the ring is regeneration.

(2) stealth : If you see a wimpy monster like K,S,H etc. sleeping in a room
put on the ring and move around it. If the monster doesn't wake up in the time
you take one round around it, it has to be stealth.

(3) add strength : obvious as soon as you put it on.

(4) searching, slow digestion, teleportation etc.: You have to keep these on
for a long enough time to find out, unless you are lucky e.g. in case of
searching or teleportation.

Of course most of these tricks are applied with two risks:

   (1) ring may be cursed.

   (2) you may waste some food so most of the tricks are applied only
when you have atleast 3-4 food items.

It's also possible to I.D. rings and scrolls (and potions and
sticks) by dipping them in magic pools. In the case of
rings this is a bit less risky than wearing them,
but you might find yourself wielding a cursed ring as a weapon
while your +1,+3 Bastard Sword hangs useless at your side.
My experience has been that it's OK to I.D. scrolls and potions
in magic puddles. You can usually ID a stick by testing it, but
rings should be unworn until you can find an identity scroll unless
you find yourself in a desperate situation and putting on that
unknown ring is the only chance you have of getting out of it.
When I first started playing the game, I just tried everthing
indiscriminately and wound up with a cursed ring about 5 times
out of 7. After this period, I learned not to try on rings
or strange armor unless I had either an identity scroll or a
scroll of remove curse, which is the only way to get the damn
things off.
