[gnu.emacs.bug] Emacs memory allocation

In GNU Emacs 18.52.6 of Wed Mar  8 1989 on guinan (xenix)

Is there any way that Emacs could give back memory to the operating system?
A common problem here is that Emacs grows indefinitely, hogging more and
more system resources.

Does anyone have a solution to this problem? (Or any reasons why it
can't/shouldn't be done)
