Has anyone out there gotten Emacs to run reliably under DEC's X11 with the DECwindows window manager? I am the using DECwindows window manager (which itself runs under X11) on a VAXstation 3/GPX running ULTRIX. I have been having problems with Emacs version 18.50 and 18.53, built for X11 (e.g., built with the HAVE_X_WINDOWS and X11 flags defined). While building Emacs 18.53 we had to define the SYSTEM_MALLOC flag in config.h. If this was not done, multiple definition errors arose at link time on _malloc, _realloc, and _free. Emacs version 18.50 has been dying on random window updates. This seems to happen more when I run two copies of Emacs, but this could just be due to more frequent window updates when I switch between Emacs. When Emacs dies, it prints "synchronization lost" in the window it was executed from. Since 18.50 is out of date, we built a new copy of Emacs 18.53. This functioned even worse than version 18.50. Normal character entry caused heavy CPU usage (load average over 1, where the old version normally ran significantly under 1). Version 18.53 also died during screen update, although no error messages were printed. Are there any special things that have to be done to build Emacs for DEC's X11 implementation? Does anyone know if Emacs version 18.54 fixes any of these problems? Thanks for reading this. I will be grateful for any help. Ian Kaplan Sr. Software Engineer MasPar Computer Corp.
