I am using Emacs 18.52 on Xenix 386 2.3.1. RMAIL did not work because USER was not defined. This is no big deal, I just defined USER in my .profile, but this is annoying to have to do when other xenix programs don't need it, particularly if one has to adminster multiple systems. Should rmail.el be using (user-login-name) instead of $USER?
