I defeated a monster (E), and it left behind a scroll which I assumed couldn't be a scare monster, because it was sitting on it (Carrying it?). But it was! (I found out the hard way.) Isn't this a bug?

#R:utcsrgv:-61300:uiucdcs:9500069:000:834 uiucdcs!mcewan Oct 23 00:10:00 1982 I, too, have seen this phenomenon. I had always assumed that the routine that generates monsters with treasure didn't check to make sure that its (randomly generated) treasure was not a scare. However, I've seen one case where a monster appears to have picked up a scare monster that was laying on the ground! I entered a room, found a scroll, and left to look for a monster to test it with. As I was leading a hobgoblin back towards the scroll I ran into a yeti. Killed the yeti, which dropped a scroll. Tested the scroll with the H, and it was a scare. When I went back for the original scroll, it was gone! Since I was on that level for some time afterwards, racking up experience, and never saw another scroll, I assume the yeti picked up the scroll I saw earlier. Maybe monsters are only afraid of the scroll in your presence???

A zombie once found me a scare monster scroll: I entered a long lighted room with a scroll in the center and a zombie at the other end. I had a few more HP's to heal, so I let the zombie come to me. Strangely engough, rather than walking over the scroll, the zombie walked AROUND the scroll to attack me. I wasn't on mimic level, so I knew what \that/ scroll was! Useless Ulysses Not yet a total winner....

<yum yum> I always thought that monsters couldn't stand on a scare monster scroll. However, I just beat up on a centaur and there underneath him was a scroll. I felt secure reading it because obviously not scare monster and I would not be "wasting" it. Imagine my surprise when I heard maniacal laughter. Will rogue (this was 5.3 by the way) CREATE monsters (on a new level) standing on scare monster? Is this a bug or a "feature"? Has anyone else run into this? I suspect the centaur was carrying it. > I suspect the centaur was carrying it. I have killed both trolls and > nymphs and had them leave behind a scare monster scroll. > Perhaps it was created carrying it. I've never known a monster to pick up a scare monster scroll that I've left lying somewhere, even though centaurs, yetis and others will pick up dropped objects. -- Richard Mateosian {amd,decwrl,fortune,hplabs,ihnp4}!nsc!srm nsc!srm@decwrl.ARPA

I have had a nymph actually STEAL a Scare Monster scroll from me! (Talk about frustrating!) From what I've heard, monsters can be created on top of Scare Monster scrolls; they just can't move on top of them. Red

When Rogue 5.3 generates a new level, it occasionally creates monsters on top of weapons, gold, doorways, food, or *SCROLLS* There is a small, yet finite chance that a monster will be created on top of a scare monster scroll. I had an identical experience: I killed a centaur and a found a scroll beneath him. I read the scroll only to find that I had wasted a "scare monster". He was asleep when I found him, because I rested a while before the attack. He wasn't carrying it because when you kill a monster carrying an object, that object never falls on the spot where the monster was standing, it only falls into one of the eight adjacent squares. Therefore the centaur must have been created on top of the scare monster scroll. Unfortunately, in this type of game, almost any bug like this could be classified as a feature.
