In GNU Emacs 18.55.1 of Wed Aug 23 1989 on Sun3 (berkeley-unix)
find-alternate-file fails when re-reading in a dired-buffer.
emacs -q <cr>
C-x C-f ~ <cr>
C-x C-v . <cr>
(claims to read in the 'ls' listing, then blam!
your back in *scratch*)
(Find find-alternate-file is often a fast way rename Makefile<8> to
the lowest available Makefile<number>.)
