[net.games.rogue] do no appreciate

ksl@hou2e.UUCP (K.LIU) (11/08/84)

I do not appreciate those [insert 4-letter word here] people
who add lines directed to me:

... I should know. I was a total winner N times ...
... I went back up and down N times ...
... I am a rogue wizard ...

I am not saying you're lying. Just that they're not needed.
Because I've been a total winner too. [many times for V. 7.0, some for Ad.
Rogue]

Here is what I think is appropiate as a reply to a(n) (in)correct article:

Dear [friend|path-name]:

I think you are [in]correct in the matter regarding
the [name] [potion|scroll|ring|stick|misc.]. I beleive
the correct [potion|scrool|ring|stick|misc.] for [name]
is [so and so].

I hope you find the above information useful!

Happy Roguing!

Also I don't like the people who read the article subject, not the article
and promptly reply. I received 4 replies with what they think it is
when what I actually posted was what I think it is and not a question.

I seriously doubt that 'tingling feeling' scroll is detect food.
No versions I know [3.6|4.5|5.2|5.3|7.0] have anything CALLED
detect food. Try it, and identify it!

Gandalf -- in Rogue 5.3, there is a scroll of food detection.
If it is read on a level where at least one item of food is lying about,
the message "Your nose tingles and you smell food" is displayed, and the
location of the food is shown as well. If there is no food on the current
level, the message is "Your nose tingles." Also, I *think*, if the food
happens to be in the same *room* as you are, the first message becomes
"Your nose tingles..Food!".

Perhaps the source of current confusion is that the word "tingles"
appears in relation to this item, as well as in relation to the staff of
drain life.

As far as I'm concerned, after reading little tidbits of stuff from
you, I'm not surprised to see that you are wrong again. In 5.3
rogue, there is a detect food scroll and if you read it with no
food in any room on the level you are on, you will get the message
'your nose tingles.'

I have yet to be convinced that you know much about anything the
way you 'compose' your articles.

Dear Mr. Gandalf:

I have not found the Amulet yet. I have not gone up and down the stairs, just
down until I die from some overgrown scary. I have only played 5.3. So I
guess that if I were to tell you that I have found this nifty scroll that
is called "detect food" and have used it to either find food on a new level,
or to make my nose tingle on levels where there is no food, you'll probably
tell me that I didn't.

Of course, these scrolls were used after they were identified, so I would have
to tell you that you were wrong! And, BTW, I enjoy hearing that there are
actually people out there that have found the Amulet. The opinions of
neophytes like me may not be as valuable as the experienced rogue player.

BTW, do you have an address that you could include hencforth in your articles
so I don't have to post these kind of things to the net?

Gandalf,

If you don't like getting this kind of mail then stop
making unsubstantiated comments about rogue in general, or at
LEAST admit that you were referring to one of the hacked versions
of rogue. Anything can happen in a bastard rogue, and since
most of us out here have to make do with 3.6, 5.2, or 5.3, which
came on the distribution tape, don't blame us if we call you on
obvious inaccuracies as related to THOSE versions. (People who
have these mythical versions 7.0 and advanced rogue can comment
on "gandalf's" accuracy on those versions. I can have no opinion
on versions I don't have access to.)

As to the issue of being a total winner on a specific version,
if someone has bothered to grind through the 100 or so games
it takes to become a total winner in 3.6 or 5.3 (both of which
we have) I'm impressed, and am willing to admit that he probably
knows what he's talking about. A handful of us rogues here
can just about generate a 'complete rogue spoiler' from memory.
I don't believe one should confine one's remarks to "I believe
'A cloak of darkness surrounds you' refers to a potion of blind-
ness" when someone on the net insists in a loud voice that it's
a potion of gain strength. (My example.) You made obvious
misstatements that needed to be cleared up, at least for the
sake of the less experianced roguers out there that might
BELIEVE you. If this bothers you, start a net.games.rogue.hacked
and go your merry way.

You've probably been corrected on your current gaffe about
the scroll of food detection in 5.3 twenty times or so
by now. Get your facts straight!

In version 5.3, the food detection scroll with make your nose tingle when
there is no food on the current level.
