[gnu.emacs.bug] emacs -display should add the new display to the env

nrt@CS.BROWN.EDU (10/27/89)

Using GNU Emacs 18.55, when Emacs is started with the -display
or -d option to tell it which X display to use, there doesn't seem to
be any way to tell from within the Emacs what display it is running
on.

The best solution would be to set the DISPLAY environment
variable in emacs.c when the -display line is read, so that
subprocesses of Emacs which use X know what display to use. Failing
this, a lisp variable which reflects the current display being used
would allow you to put this into the environment from within lisp. (I
can't find any such variable at this point.)
