Using GNU Emacs 18.55, when Emacs is started with the -display or -d option to tell it which X display to use, there doesn't seem to be any way to tell from within the Emacs what display it is running on. The best solution would be to set the DISPLAY environment variable in emacs.c when the -display line is read, so that subprocesses of Emacs which use X know what display to use. Failing this, a lisp variable which reflects the current display being used would allow you to put this into the environment from within lisp. (I can't find any such variable at this point.)
