[net.games.rogue] black pudding

phil@amdcad.UUCP (Phil Ngai) (11/25/84)

Any hints on dealing with black puddings? When I hit them I get
more! What does a potion of phasing do? Is a staff of anti-matter
good for anything besides destroying walls and passageways? How
about a scroll of petrification?

I am playing super rogue 2.0. thanks.

Super/Advanced Rogue 2.0 or there abouts:

Black puddings need to be zapped with a wand of cancellation
	to prevent them from fissioning.

Potions of phasing allow you to walk through walls. Only
Xorns can chase you there. If you're in a wall when
the potion wears off you'll die an ignoble death by
	petrification.

Enter a treasure room. Get all the monsters to follow you
in a parade to a remote corner of the dungeon. Quaff a potion
of phasing. Do an end run on the parade back to the treasue
room. Anti-matter the entrances. Enjoy sorting through the loot.
Then set a trapdoor for yourself and fall through to the next
	level.

A scroll of petrification will freeze all the existing
monsters on that level allowing you to beat them into little
itty bits at your own leisure. No deadline pressures here.

My solutions for black puddings is either genocide or trapdoors
(make THEM walk over it). I suppose anti-matter would work on them too...

A potion of phasing allows you to walk through walls. A wand of
anti-matter will destroy *anything* it gets zapped at, including monsters
which might otherwise be a pain to eliminate...or stairs!

I found an interesting feature of magic pools - monsters can't cross them
'cause they can't swim I guess. If you have black puddings and know where a
pool is then get the puddings to kill themselves. You don't get points but
you do get rid of the little buggers. The only other ways I have seen to get
rid of them are polymorph (risky), genocide (there MUST be a better use), or
drain life.

Of course, if your phasing hasn't worn off you needn't waste the trapdoor.
