GNU Emacs 18.55.1 of Tue Oct 31 1989 on marat (hpux) I suggest that display-buffer or split-window be customizable in order to permit the user to define where pop up windows appear (e.g. vertical rather than horizontal splitting on wide screens). Some sort of customization is probably even more important in the X context.
