EUROTRA Project --------------- University of Essex ------------------- The Essex EUROTRA group, part of the EEC's Machine Translation Project, invites informal applications for the post of research officer(s) for the period from January 1990 ( or as soon as possible thereafter ) until the end of December 1990. We are interested in appointing up to two individuals with a general background in Linguistics, Computational Linguistics and/or one or more European (EEC) languages. Candidates with expertise in Dutch and/or Spanish would be particularly welcome. EUROTRA is one of the largest multi-lingual Machine Translation projects in the world with over 150 researchers spread throughout Europe. It aims to provide a prototype system capable of translating between any and all of the EEC languages. As we enter the last year of the current project, the main thrust of the work is to build up bi-lingual and mono-lingual dictionaries. The job(s) would be chiefly concerned with the area of the Dutch-English and Spanish-English dictionaries and the writing of transfer components from those languages into English. Thus as well as having knowledge of Dutch or Spanish, candidates should be willing to learn about the EUROTRA system in order to be able to use it within a short space of time. As well as satisfying our current need, the successful candidate(s) will have opportunity to acquire or extend knowledge of Computing and Computational Linguistics. Those interested should reply as soon as possible either by email to Andrew Betts with the e-mail address: andrew@uk.ac.essex or by surface post to: Andrew Betts, Department of Language and Linguistics, University of Essex, Wivenhoe Park, Colchester.
