[gnu.emacs] Losing events under X

pinkas@hobbit.intel.com (Israel Pinkas ~) (02/24/89)

I have been running GNU Emacs 18.52 under X11 (DECWindow - UWS 2.0) for
some time. I have been experiencing a rather annoying problem.

Every once in a while, Emacs loses a keystroke, and beeps instead. I have
not been able to track it down, nor have I been able to quantify the
problem. Sometimes Emacs loses the keystroke, other times it appears that
it receives a strange event. (Read only buffers report an error about
trying to modify the buffer.)

Recently, after upgrading to the production release of Ultrix 3.0, the
terminal from which I ran Emacs has reported Xlib problems and lost
sequence problems. (This never happened before.) In both cases, Emacs
died. This happens more often after running xphoon. (I loose keystrokes
even when I have the default root window.) I have verified that this is
not a window manager problem.

I am running a fairly vigin copy of 18.52. (I don't believe that I have
made any changes.) I am using the GNU version of malloc instead of the
Xlib version (as per my post in comp.emacs.bugs).

Has anybody else seen this? If so, have they fixed it? If not, does
anybody have a clue as to what might be going wrong so that I can work on it?

I've had the same problem running X11.[123] on sun 3/50's running
SunOs{4.0.1, 4.0, 3.5.2, 3. etc...}. Usually in xterm, seldom in
emacs.

Since the bugs seem so similar, I'd bet they are X or X server
problems (although I wouldn't rule out hard/firm bugs). *My* problem
is clearly not emacs.

There's supposedly a hardware bug in the Sun3 style keyboard (this
is also the keyboard on Sun4's, at least older Sun4's) that causes
the "lost keystroke, beep (or click loudly) instead" problem. It happens
if you type too fast. It's not emacs's fault, it's not even X's fault.
