I have killed ghosts, usually with strength over 18 and a good weapon. It takes time. When you can't handle ghosts, be careful about going into cul-de-sacs if a ghost may be nearby. If two ghosts were fighting each other, it's possible that you made them do it by the ring oyu were wearing. This might be the ring of adornment. Anyone know for sure what makes wild monsters fight each other in your presence? - Toby Robison (not Robinson!) {allegra, decvax!ittvax, fisher, princeton}!eosp1!robison

The only reason the two ghosts fought each other and not you is that you were wearing a ring of discord. There are (at least) 3 ways of killing them: 1) Polymorph them into something else and kill that.(Polymorph seems to be one of the few wands that affect them.) This is not always safe (i.e. a friend of mine got a Xorn on 4th level) and you lose out on the points for the ghost (considerable). 2) Have good armor, a good weapon (at least +0, as - weapons don't hit at all, but +5 would be a lot better), and good hit points, then just slog it out. (This is the way I usually do it, I try each ghost as I meet it and see if I'm hitting him more than he's hurting me) 3) Wear a ring of regeneration and attack with any weapon +0 or better. (This takes a long time (need food) and may not be good enough against high level ghosts (low level ghosts do dammage at a rate of around 1/4 HP per turn). Often helpful with the ghost's treasure is a call to the person whos ghost it is (to find out what's cursed, which wand is which, etc.). Ray
