After reading a scroll of gold detection, I've sometimes noticed a group
of gold pieces on the level that I could never get to. Anyone know how?

Some greedy little creatures that like to hoard gold often store it in treasure rooms. If you do find yourself in one of the rooms, beware! You may be discovered and escorted out. Teleportation is useful, along with wands of digging. Sean

There are no doors in vaults, so the following are some of the ways of getting into vaults. 1) Fall through a trapdoor from a level above. 2) Teleport into the vault. 3) Use a wand of digging to make a passage into the vault. If you propose using methods 1 and 2, be sure you can get out again! Otherwise unpleasant things will happen to you.
