Is there a way of mapping the arrow key in my terminal to the basic cursor movement functions? I'd like to have them in addition the the usual C-b, C-f, C-p and C-n.

To enable arrow keys you'll have to write a terminal key mapping file. I've got some enhanced ones for VT100 and VT200 series and some HP terminals. Send mail if interested.
