[net.games.rogue] Rogue Trivia

mam@charm.UUCP (Matthew Marcus) (01/31/85)

<This newsgroup is illuminated with a shimmering blue light.>

Some odd things I noticed while playing my favorite mind-rotter:

1)	"You can move again" seems to take time. This explains certain things
that happen when you faint.

2)	If you drop all your magic items before attacking an N, then the N can
hit you more than once without dissapearing, just like a normal monster. This
gives you time to dispatch it. Of course, it's usually not practical to drop
all that stuff, which is why this note counts as trivia.

3)	If you have very little gold, then an L can take it all. I suspect that
it works on the basis of a random number, with no account taken of how much
gold you have. If the number is greater than your supply, you lose it all.
If you have no gold, and an L hits you, it disappears anyway, unlike N's.

4)	N's are created with no treasure when a create monster scroll or
polymorph wand is used. L's so created drop gold when killed.

5)	It is possible for a polymorph wand to turn an X into an X. This is
dissapointing, and sometimes fatal.

6)	You don't regenerate hit points when in battle, even when fighting an
R or L. Thus, you can't 'rest' by letting an R hit you.

7)	I get the feeling that firing a drain life wand into a doorway only
drains from the monster standing right in front of you - you have to be in the
room to get the whole roomful.

8)	I find that my commonest fatal error is the 'one hit too many'
syndrome in which I either don't realize how low my HP are, or think I can take
one more hit from the monster than I actually can. Anybody else find the same
thing?

9)	I like to keep even bad or useless magic items around as 'nymph bait'.
N's will steal anything magic, even if it's bad, so keeping the bad stuff
reduces (slightly) the chance that your good stuff will get ripped off should
you fight an N and lose.

10)	If a U doesn't confuse you on the first hit, it won't thereafter.

11)	Once I zapped a sleeping monster with an unknown wand. The monster
turned into what looked like a moving potion (a ! that moved toward me).
Some part of the program must have thought it was a potion because when I tried
to shoot it with arrows, the arrows just went right past and hit the far wall,
as if there were no monster there. Of course, the wand was of polymorph, and
the moving potion was a mimic, as became clear when it reached me, turned into
an M, and beat on me. Still, you should be allowed to shoot at potions, if you
want, especially if they are monsters.

12)	A *CHALLENGE*:
Find a good use for a 'teleport to' wand, other than as a wimpy missile weapon
or nymph bait. I have not yet succeeded.

I once had a good use for teleport to. I had a centaur a few steps in
front of me and an aquator(rust monster) about 6 steps away to the side.
I was able to bring him closer and move into a doorway, blocking off the
centaur's attack.

This is the only use I know of for a wand of teleport to, but I guess it
is better than no use at all.

Consider this:

You are at the door of a party room. There are VERY NASTY monsters
everywhere, except for one relatively harmless (:-) Rust Monster.
Using the 'teleport to' wand, you pull the Rust Monster to the space
immediately in from on the door. You can shoot arrows diagonally, but
monsters can't get at you. (What? You don't have any arrows? *sigh*)

Most of the things in this article, I've heard or seen before,
BUT, some of these things deserve notes. I liked the following...

DEFINATELY! In one srogue game, we were at 102 hps out of 155. But a pit
fiend killed us with one breath of flame. NASTY!

Srogue again, where cursed items can be dipped in shimmering pools...

Either that or you simply missed the monster. Still, this is WEIRD!

> 12)	A *CHALLENGE*:

For those players faint of heart, stand in the doorway and
zap gold or magic items to you with a teleport to. This avoids traps
and sleeping monsters. Also, if a monster is beating on you, a teleport
to stands a slight chance of teleport away for just a few squares. This
could provide valuable time to change weapons or quaff a healing.

			Thanks for the trivia!

Consider the following situation:

   ----------------------
   | |
   | +##########T####@###################R#######
   | | #
   | |
   ----------------------

   Level: 12 Gold: 723 Hp: (10/75) Str: 16(18) Ac: 7 Exp: ?/?

Now consider that you have found a scroll of protect armor and are
faced with this frightening situation. Assuming of course that you
know the door way is in frount of you and not behind, you simply zap
the rust monster with the 'Teleport to' wand and head for the door!!!

The chances are soooo thin of finding your self in this situation,
but I just thought I'd add my two cents worth.

that's THREE questions, but who's counting?

1) a scroll of scare monster. i'll let you figure out how it's supposed
to work.
2) in 5.2 and 5.3, if you are blind, you can't be confused since you can't see
in advanced rogue's, a potion of clear thought would work, except medusas
don't confuse, they stiffen you (or turn you to stone).
3) take away half you hit points

That is a scroll of scare monster. What you do is NOT read it. Simply
place it on the floor and stand on it. You can then beat the crap out of
any monster that comes along. The reason that you hear the 'maniacal laughter'
is because the monsters know that you have destroyed the usefulness of
the scroll. Once used in the manner described above, if you pick it up
it will turn to dust.

It is a scare monster scroll, the laughter implies that you wasted it by
reading it. My biggest problem with this is that I usually don't find
another one for a long time if ever.

chu@lasspvax.UUCP (Clare Chu) (02/17/85)

Thanks everyone for the helpful hints. I have used a scare
monster scroll when two leppies and a centaur were chasing me
through a maze on one side and a troll was on the other side.
Well I dropped the scroll and beat them all up, collecting the
gold the leppies dropped.

Has anyone noticed why sometimes when you eat food it says
"yuk, this tastes awful!" and other times it says "yum, this
tastes great." I have a suspicion has to do with whether you've
found food on your own, but I may be wrong. Anyway this is
trivia, for sure, since it doesn't seem to affect anything.

Has anyone found a way to find out what a ring does besides
reading a scroll? Many times I have a lot of rings but no
scroll to identify them. I put them on, take them off and
fail to see any changes. Hmmmm....

teleport to is handy in party rooms when there's a wimpy
monster in line of sight.

"maniacal laughter in the distance" is scare monster.
stand on it and nothing will hit you. Possibly the most powerful
scroll in rogue. Caveat: dragons still can flame you.

a vampire is fairly wimpy, except that critical hits reduce
your MAXIMUM hp.

I've never found anything to prevent being confused by
medusae (or umber hulks). Good luck. (Head for a hallway)

I won't bother with this one since it has already been answered.

Quarf a potion of blindness before going into battle, or use a wand of
cancilation. The wand will remove the medusa's special power of
confusing you.

> 3). What does a vampire do to you?

A vampire drains your strength.

Telling about these little points might be contrary to the "philosophy"
of rogue, but I think winning electronic games might as well be a skill
learned through SPOILERs such as this one.

1) Maniacal laughter is a scary thing. I would be scared if I heard it,
but the monsters who hear it get scared for real.

3) usually they kill you. They drain permanent strength on good hits.

The answer to the question about the rings is simple:
Wear a ring as you did, but instead of taking it off right away,
as you did, walk arround with it on for a while, and soon you will be
able to guess what it is; A ring of teleportation will start throwing
you arround - that is clear. If you realize after a while that all
the critters are awake as you go into rooms - it is a ring of
agrevate monster, etc. For some rings this is not enough, but for
most it will do. Just make sure that you either carry a lot of food or
have a scroll of remove curse - most rings consume rings terribly.

The message "yuk, this food tastes awful!" means that you get one
experience point for eating rotten food, as apposed to eating "good"
  food.

On older versions of rogue (like 5.2) if you merely drop a scare
monster scroll and don't move off of it, you will be standing on it.
This is the only way since the move command does not work. Of course if
you don't have a scare monster scroll, well your up s**t creek without
 a two handed sword.

		Why not?!!%$#@

	1) First you identify the scroll. (scroll of I.D. or by wasting one)
	2) Find a party room.

	3) Get in the door.

	4) Enter the "d" (drop command).

	5) Kick some ass!

The above strategy is not the best course to take. If you are
wearing any of the above rings, they will be cursed, and you will not be able
to remove them. And who wants to be kept transported all over the
level, or have Leprechans chase you constantly. Not me that's for
sure!!!

You should wait until you have a scroll of id. rings/wand/staff before
wear any ring. a good idea is to have a lot of food, or a ring
of slow digestion on while you have another ring on..as this will
counter act the food consuming property of rings.

                     happy rogueing!!

Not quite the only way. If your pack is full, you won't pick up any object you
move onto. Thus if your pack was originally full (or nearly full) when you
dropped the scare monster scroll, you can fill your pack during your
exploration of the level, and return to the scare monster scroll (often with
monsters in tow) without destroying it. In the extreme case, you can use
a scare monster scroll on two different levels: the level you found it on
(before you pick it up), and the level you drop it on. This is one way to
get some use out of otherwise useless items (such as potions of poison) in
your pack.

Also keep in mind that you don't necessarily have to stand on a scare
monster scroll to get some use out of it: monsters will never enter a
square containing a scare monster scroll, so you can use one to run
interference for you in various ways (for example, you can play the old
"sleeping monster" ploy with a scroll instead of a sleeping monster, where
you play ring-around-the-sleeper to get some breathing space while fighting
another monster. This has the additional advantage that there is never any
risk of the scroll waking up!)
