On a 3b2 700 under sVr3 I've got GNU Emacs 18.54 built [ HAVE_PTY defined ], but I find that it does not work properly through a DataKit VC. I do find however, that when run through a direct port it appears to work properly. Symptoms: The screen opens up correctly, but typed chars do not appear on the screen. Ctrl chars are also generally ignored. Emacs will beep at ^g and ^z, and occasionally it will produce the unsupported operation message ( autosave, abort- core dump ). Does anyone know what is going on or [ even ] how to debug the problem. thanks again, David William Preisler System Administrator AT&T Bell Laboratories Email: att!mtune!dwp 200 Laurel Avenue Middletown, NJ 07748 Phone: (201) 957-2594

I had the same problem with GNU Emacs over STARLAN. One question, are the
devices DataKit use for remote logins streamio devices? If they are you're
out of luck. When I found out that STARLAN devices were streamio devices, I
was annoyed. When I found out that streamio devices do not behave like
tty's, I was ticked. GNU Emacs makes certain ioctl calls that will fail on
streamio devices. I could'nt find a solution to my problem.

One question, are the We are running GNU Emacs over STARLAN on a 3b2/400 with no problems. I did not do the installation, but lookin at the sources, I noticed that it is version 18.51 (last ChangeLog entry: Fri May 6 10:41:46 1988...). Has RMS made some sort of change since then that makes 3b2/STARLAN croak? If so, I would like to know before I attempt to upgrade :-) --DLM ********************************************************************** David L. Miller Internet: millerd@prime.tricity.wsu.edu (?)
