[gnu.emacs] Answer to my problem with 18.55 under X on Sun

philf@xymox.metaphor.com (Phil Fernandez) (10/27/89)

Thanks to everyone who replied to my plea for help getting X11 support
in 18.55 working correctly under SunOS. Problem turned out to be
really stupid. It seems that some of the files under lisp/term
(including x-win.el) had permissions set g-r (no group read), and I
happened to be in the esoteric group to which they belonged. I'm not
quite sure how I managed to get things set that way -- I was the one
that originally installed gnuemacs. Anyhow, emacs failed to read
x-win at startup, because of permissions denied, and so didn't
initialize correctly for X. No warning of this problem,
unfortunately. Gnuemacs should probably report an error in this case.
