[gnu.emacs] recalling commands in shell mode

Does anyone have code that lets you recall more than the most recent
input in shell mode?  C-c C-y is fine but I'd like to be able to
recall earlier input as well.  I think something equivalent to the
kill ring would be ideal.  I'm a newcomer to emacs.
