If you compile emacs w/ the X Window System support, it defaults to attempting
to start up w/ the X server on the local machine (localhost:0.0, I assume).
If you want to start it up under a tty subshell, you have to use the -nw flag
to say ``no window.''
Hope this solves the problem.

Your message:
We are running GNU emacs 18.55 on both SUN SPARC SUNOS 4.0.3 and DEC
3100 Ultrix workstations. When emacs is invoked from a subshell on
these machines, it hangs; PS shows it to be in state "T" (stopped on
tty output?). When the same emacs is invoked with the DISPLAY
environment variable set appropriately, it creates an X window and all
is well. I have the feeling I'm missing something obvious here; does
anyone know why this is happening?
Thanks,

We have exactly the same problem here on our Integrated Solutions
Optimum V machine. I've tried the -nw flag but it doesn't help
anything.
Emacs hangs after evaluating the startup files (~/.emacs, etc.) and
typing the first character.
