[gnu.emacs] gap and other methods

I note that many people have recently debated the merits of various methods
of designing an editor and some have drawn on their own experiences and
pointed to the special features of various editors. I for one would find
their comments more useful if they could refer readers to literature on the
subject. Can the literati who have felt compelled to write about this
topic give references to books and articles on the subject, both general
literature on the topic of editor design and literature pertaining to the
special design methods and editors to which they have drawn attention ?
And if the literature is not suitable for reference in this manner, maybe
they will consider contributing to it.
