The maniacal laughter you hear in the distance is the monsters laughing because you read a Scare Monster scroll, which is effective only if lying on the floor. By the way, after you drop it, you can't pick it up again. John Stewart

What does the scroll that causes you to hear "Maniacal laughter in the distance" mean? I used to think it made certain doorways 'secret', but I'm not so sure now.. Replys would probably be best through mail unless you think this question's of general interest.. Thanks. -- Jordan K. The scroll 'Maniacal Laughter' is a scare monster scroll. If you read it you wasted it. The laughter is all the monsters laughing at you. What you do is drop the scroll and then MOVE onto it (using the M(ove) command.) If you play a version of rogue without a move command all you can do is drop it, When you try to pick it up again it will turn to dust. You can identify the scroll by trying to have a monster step on it before you pick it up. If the monster steps on the scroll it is NOT a scare, if the monster will not step on the scroll it is a scare monster. If you find a scare this way you get to use it, pick it up, and use it again. As a general note to those of you out there who are curious about such things (scrolls and such that aren't blatently obvious), there is a way (if you are lucky) of determining what such mean. Once you get such a scroll (ie maniacal laughter) name it something like maniacal laughter!! Then, if you get another one, identify it. That way you can find out what it is and have the satisfaction of not having asked anyone. Ron Samuels (samuels@h-sc1, or better yet samuels_b@h-sc4) aka One Tin Soldier
