[net.games.rogue] Wally the Wonder Badger

mie@panda.UUCP (Martin I. Eiger) (03/20/85)

One of the more inane features of rogue 5.3 is the -d flag. When you invoke
rogue -d, it kills you right away, prints out a tombstone, and tries to add
you to the score file. It selects some small number of gold for you, a
level where you died, and a cause of death. The amount of gold is always
something small, ranging from about 2 to 90. The level, which appears only
if you make the score file, is typically something credible like level 53.
The cause of death is either a random monster (Aquator, Bat, Centaur, ...),
a weapon (arrow, bolt, dart, ...), or a medical phenomenon (hypothermia,
starvation, ...).

Or you can be killed by "a Wally the Wonder Badger".

Does anybody know anything about "Wally the Wonder Badger"?

This wouldn't be the U of Wisconsin Badger, would it? Maybe put in by a
Big-10 fan?

Wally the Wonder Badger is the wizard of the dungeon.
He is the one who gets the 10% of your gold when you die.
(at least this makes more sense than "He's dead, Jim."
which I can't figure out....

Yes, I know a lot about "Wally the Wonder Badger". I
knowwhere the name comes from, and why Ken put it in, and even
a small reference to the printed word.

We're all very glad/impressed/etc... that YOU know the TRUTH about
Wally the Wonder Badger.

Since you didn't condescend to enlighten us, why did you waste our
time telling us about it?

Well, well. I wondered when someone would notice that.

Wally the Wonder Badger is the resident wizard of the dungeon. He,
along with Shreldalff the Shy, cleaned out the Evil One, and he took
over the dungeon. He is an industrious badger, made intelligent by
accidentally nosing into Shreldalff's study. While there, he traced
out a rune of questing on the floor (by accident, actually; he just was
chasing a spider around, but Shreldalff is not only Shy, but
credulous), and Shreldalff was intruiged enough to cast a spell of
intelligence on him to find out what quest would have been entrusted to
a badger.

Although disappointed when he found out what had been happening, Wally
was such a wonderful conversationalist, he adopted him as an
apprentice. Having taught him everything he knew (although Wally was
able to overcome this handicap), Shreldalff and Wally went off to evict
the Evil One from the Dungeons of Doom for non-payment of rent, not to
mention keeping evil mutant creatures around, thus lowering property
values in the neighborhood.

After the battle, Shreldalff and Wally agreed that Wally should clean
out the dungeon. Unfortunately, the people who want the Amulet of Yendor
(unnamed, except to say they are distant relations of Libby the Kid) can't
wait for the cleanup task to be finished. Sorry.
