This is a problem which never seems to go away. How best to analyse those DNA sequences you've spent months accumulating? I've looked at several of the micro based programs but without finding one that seems to do everything I want. That is, without being more expensive than the machine it runs on. It's a MAC environment here at the U of A Biochem dept so interfacin with a MAC is important. Some of the programs I've looked at are: (Database searching, DNA/proteins; shotgun sequence analysis are very important to me). MacVector (IBI) : didn't like that at all. DNA Strider : CHEAP!! GREAT, but very limited. Geneworks (Intelligenetics for MAC) : Fancy, but not that great. DNA Star: Expensive, but good. OK, maybe I'm too picky and will never get everything I want. But now I'm thinking about a workstation based setup. Does anyone out there have any experience with a system that will run on a SUN? (on a NEXT would be even better). I've seen adverts for a LARK set of programs but never used them. I used to use BIONET in the good old days, any info on the Intelli- genetics suite in current use (besides being expensive). Any information would be appreciated, or if you know of someone using these systems I'd be grateful of a contact address if they wouldn't mind being bugged with a few questions. Chris Upton
