In response to the query about measuring temperature, salinity, etc a device known as a CTD (Conductivity, Temperature, Depth) is employed. It works by sending a water tight 'fish' over the side in which sensors and transmitter electronics are housed. Data is coded and sent up the winch cable (which is equiped with conductor wires imbedded in the cable) via FM frequency signal. Its a common and indespensable oceanographic tool. Hope this helps Mike Murrell Univ. of Wash School of Oceanography Seattle, WA 91195 USA :wq :post k
