[net.games.rogue] odd situation

yes2@sphinx.UChicago.UUCP (Randy Rzasa) (07/26/85)

An interesting thing happened in a game a while ago.
Just as I was about to die my terminal was disconnected.
Several days later I noticed that I had a rogue.save file in my
directory. Not remembering what game it was, I decided to start it up.
Now the interesting part: According to the status line, I had -1 hit
points! I hit a few ^L's to make sure that it wasn't an error, and sure
enough it wasn't; I began running away from the C, regenerating my hit points
to 0 and finally into positive HP's.
Has this happened to anyone? The version is 5.2.
I died the next time that I hit 0 (was wearing a ring of aggravate monster).

Accidenally, I discovered that if you stop rogue after the
tombstone is displayed, then kill your sh process with stty 0 you
can recover the game with negative hit points. It's kind of neat
because the map of the level is gone and you're playing over the
tombstone. You have to recover to positive hit points before you
can fight anything (including Rust monsters -- also this should
give an indication of the version; I haven't played it in a while).
The bad thing is that you'll lose 10% of your gold every time you
^Z rogue after being killed.

I havn't played rogue for some time, but in 5.2 there use to be a neat bug.
If you read an enchant <armor|weapon> scroll and when it said "As you read the
scroll it... -more-" you hit ^Z and sent the process a hangup signal. Rogue
would save your game after enchanting the <armor|weapon>. If you did a
rogue -r, you would still have the scroll and your <armor|weapon> would be
one class higher. It did have a tendency to cause confuse monster scrolls to
do weird things (i.e. don't read them after you do this); but who needs them
anyways when you have a (+8,+8) mace [more like nerve gas] and -6 armor.

I don't know if this bug still exists. It seems like the same thing that
was mentioned above.
