>What is a staff of magic missile used for? >How is a staff of alchemy used? Once again, our dear rogue starter has not told us the version of rogue being used. As a reminder, version of rogue vary -- there are twenty or more. Therefore, it is necessary to have the version of rogue. Within rogue, you can find out the version by typing the letter 'v'. While the first question is the same for all rogues, some versions vary the different aspects of the staff. For instance, some versions of rogue may have magic missles bounce, go through the monster and blow up everything behind it including the wall, monsters and all treasure. A staff of magic missile is an item for which to damage monsters. Below are formulas for damage, which may vary from version to version. (level)d8: For AD&D players, they realize the formula as roll an 8-sided die (level) times, and total it. This is a very popular damage formula. d8 + (level): This means roll an 8-sided die once, and add the level to it. This is another popular formula. NOTE: the level is not the level of the player, but the level of the magic-user who created this wand. This is a random number up to the current level + or - something. The first formula applies also to magic missile spells in a few versions. I have never seen a staff of alchemy, just a jug. hou2e!ksl
