Here's a couple interesting things that happened to me playing Rogue 5.3. One of them is just an interesting thing to know if you like xerocs. The other appears to be a brand new bug in the program that I have neither encountered before nor seen discussed on the net. My xeroc story is that they don't necessarily masquerade as inanimate objects in party rooms, waiting for you to try to pick them up before they attack. I hit a party room and a xeroc came right up to me from out of the blue and introduced himself. My guess is that they are probably like ice monsters, leprechauns, and nymphs in that they are created asleep and wake up only when disturbed, except in party rooms. Probably not very useful, but interesting. The bug showed up on or around level 16. I had finished exploring the level and was making my way back to the staircase, when I encountered a black unicorn. A couple of rounds with him left my hit points a little low, so I scampered back to the staircase. By that time I had regenerated a few hit points, so I decided to try whacking the beastie a few more times, and it died. But my hit points were low again, so I decided to rest and either regenerate or drop to the next level if necessary. As I hit '.', however, my hit points DECREASED! When I dropped, I was able to regenerate, but I don't understand why regenerating zapped my hit points on the previous level. I had a ring of regeneration that I don't think I was wearing, but that had worked (functioned properly) before. And rogue 5.3 doesn't have parasites or diseases or any such. Any ideas what was going on? Is this a bug in the program (I know you're out there, you rogue authors), or did they give me a potion of hallucination in the cafeteria yesterday? I think that a phantom was hitting you as you tried to regenerate. I have lost many a game that way!
