Would GCC port easily to a 16-bit machine? Has anyone ever tried this?

GCC has been ported to the Atari ST already, which uses an MC68000 CPU. It's
claimed to be a 32 bit processor by some, but is generally considered a 16 bit
machine. John Dunning at Symbolics did the port.
