TeX, C version 2.9, compiled with gcc 1.29 on a Sun-3/280, now passes the trip test. All of the supporting software, including tangle, dvitype, and web2c, were also compiled with gcc. I was able to turn on optimization for every file but one, tex4.c; I'm going to report that core dump to bug-gcc. -- Hal Peterson / Cray Research / 1440 Northland Dr. / Mendota Hts, MN 55120 hrp%hall.cray.com@uc.msc.umn.edu bungia!cray!hrp (612) 681-3145

I had a valid version with gcc as far back as 1.25. The problem with
tex4.c is new. FSF seems to create a bug with every two bugs they fix.
This prompts me to make two points. I had started trying with 1.27,
which ran the compilation to completion but produced a very badly
munged TeX, so 1.29 is a large improvement from that; at least the one
error is obvious and easily worked around.
The second point is that EVERYBODY creates a bug with every two bugs
they fix, and usually it's worse. See ``The Mythical Man-Month.''
