[gnu.gcc] branch size optimizations

Someone just pointed out to me that for machines which have
different types of branch instructions (e.g. short and long)
which can be used depending on the branch distance, GCC will
often generate the long version even when a short branch would
do nicely.

Is there any general way for GCC to handle this, or is this
type of optimization best left to GAS to handle?
