[gnu.gcc] twm vs. gcc - Thanks everyone

Thanks to the millions who pointed out that sscanf() is trying to ungetc()
right onto the poor defenseless should-be-read-only input string to sscanf().
Also thanks for the suggested workarounds.

I will check and see if we are changing/fixing this in a future release of
SunOS.
