<..> I want some hints as to how to fight leprechauns. Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated. I am sick and tired of feeling my purse lighter every time I touch one of the &"#!"'s. Also, the thought of all that potential gold left untouched makes me feel sad beyond words. Format of hins wanted: if any minimum exp.level/hp/armor/weapons are required, or whether there is any special way of tackling them. Shankar Unni {seismo|heurikon|ucbvax}!uwvax!unni.

Fighting leppies is easy, if you have a long room. The method I use is to run far away, wield my bow, and throw arrows. The poor leppie will usually die before getting too close. If the arrows fail, I fight it out. Sometimes I win, sometimes I get a lighter pack. Obviously, it helps to have a high armor-class, the higher the better (fighting leppies with an AC of one (9 in the older versions) is futile!). This is also the way I like to fight Nymphs and Ice Monsters, unless it isn't feasable. -- Dave Cohrs @ wisconsin ...!{allegra,heurikon,ihnp4,seismo,ucbvax,uwm-evax}!uwvax!dave dave@wisc-rsch.arpa

Leprechauns will leave you alone (assuming they have not been aggravated) until you attack them. There are ways of attacking from a distance. If you have a staff of cancellation, it can keep leprechauns from stealing your gold.

-- I always save the leprechauns for last. I'll search every room for monsters and stuff, hoping to pick up experience points along the way. Then, I figure, I'll be maximally prepared to hit when I throw things at it (from the maximum possible distance of course). It is more effective to throw projectile weapons while weilding the appropriate launcher (like a sling for rocks, etc...), but I rarely bother because I want to be weilding my strongest weapon if something sneaks up on me. Then again, I do lose these skirmishes frequently... -- --Bill Buie

A safe start when trying to kill a leprechaun is to get as far away from him as possible, wield your bow and pump him full of arrows. Hopefully he'll be dead before he reaches you, or at least weak enough for you to take him out with a hit or two from something more substantial than the bow & arrow

#R:uwvax:-33500:ea:3900005:000:640 ea!kel Jul 21 16:02:00 1984 [ritual offering] L's are easy most of the time. You always find them asleep, except in party rooms and when under the influence of aggravate monsters (ring or scroll). When you find them, don't attack on impulse. Instead, clear the room of other monsters so they don't get in your way, move the greatest possible distance in the room from the beast, perhaps in a doorway, and use thrown weapons (arrows, shurikens, daggers, or whatever; be careful of darts, they do practically no damage) to at least soften him up. If you can get more than three hits into him, depending on what you're throwing, you will most probably win. Ken

The bow+arrow does 1-6 per hit. Your handy mace does 2d4+1 (3-9). If you waste a turn wielding the mace, you've lost some potential points. Just hold onto that bow and continue pumping. I find this very effective. If of course you have a +2,+2 two-handed sword, this is another matter. -- Dave Cohrs @ wisconsin ...!{allegra,heurikon,ihnp4,seismo,ucbvax,uwm-evax}!uwvax!dave dave@wisc-rsch.arpa

What happens if you kill 2 Leprechauns in a row, on the same spot in a corridor, and there is only one spot for them to drop their gold? Will the gold you pick up be the total that they had between them, or will one stash be lost? (this is version 5.3)
