[gnu.gcc] Look and Feel Debate.

dvadura@watdragon.waterloo.edu (Dennis Vadura) (06/14/89)

I've been following this debate over look and feel copyrights with interest
(hard to do at times with all the mud slinging :-). I haven't seen this
mentioned as yet, and I think it about time someone pointed it out.
(If the article has been mentioned earlier than just hit 'n')

In the May issue of CACM, on page 563, there is an article by
Pamela Samuelson, entitled: "Why The Look And Feel of Software
User Interfaces Should Not Be Protected by Copyright Law".

It is interesting reading and presents what I feel to be a good case why
Apple SHOULD NOT win its lawsuit. This ofcourse does not mean that the court
will see it the same way, and as the article points out, the court in
question has previously ruled in favour of similar cases.
