[gnu.gcc] gcc port to a 16-bit machine

I am interested in porting gcc to a 16-bit machine. If anyone has
done this, I would appreciate some starter info, such as ...

... do you use SImode as 16-bit and QImode as 8-bit and ignore HImode
    (or what)?

... is there a way to control all mode sizes (including SFmode and
    DFmode)?

... any special problems that you've run into (and solutions, of course)?
