[gnu.gcc] gcc,gas,ld on HP 9000/300

I am tring to compile gcc-1.36 on a HP 9000/300 running HPUX using gnu ld, and
gas. When I try to compile gcc with gcc I get the error "ld:malformed input 
file (not rel or archive) gcc.o". I assume this is a problem with how I made 
gas or ld. Can anyone give me a clue what I might have done wrong?
