[net.games.rogue] Ultrarogue questions

sievers@lasspvax.UUCP (John Sievers) (01/30/86)

After playing UltraRogue (V 1.02 Dr. C was here) a considerable amount,
I am still puzzled by a few items in the dungeon:
     1) what does a ring of alertness do?
     2) what does a ring of free action do?
     3) what is the advantage of having the power of ownership over an item?
     4) After picking up an Artifact, can you drop it and still be given credit?
     5) Do all items have a blessed and cursed state? For example, I blessed
a scroll of genocide, but it didn't seem any different from normal.

                                                   thanx
                                                     -John

...The last bug in sight,
   one small ant passing by,
   saluted his tombstone
   and whispered, "Nice try."

Answers to more urogue questions...

1) A ring of alertness is like caffeine - it keeps you from going to
sleep (as in 'the gaze of the jackalwere puts you to sleep')

2) A ring of free action presumably prevents from being held by pit
fiends and the like, though I don't think I've ever tested it.

3) A scroll of ownership, when read and applied to any weapon, gives it
the boomerang like property of returning when thrown if it misses the
monster. If the scroll is blessed, then your weapon will return even
when it hits the monster (i.e. always returns). Gives you something
to use when you are too terrified to hit a monster.

4) You can drop artifacts after you have found them (or better yet sell
them at a trading post), but you must be carrying at least one to
go up stairs, and you only get [gold] credit for ones in your pack
or in the Magic Purse when you die (or make it out).

5) Any item can be blessed or cursed but it makes little difference for
some, like a blessed scroll of genocide is no better than a normal
one, and a blessed potion of restore abilities doesn't seem to do any
   extra good.

6) If your weapon is charged it won't hurt you (unless it explodes because
you enchant it too much). In fact, you don't need a ring of lightning
resistance if you are wearing crystalline armor -- it reflects lightning.
