[gnu.gcc] gcc vs. Sun4 cc

arul@sdsu.edu (Arul Ananthanarayanan) (10/30/89)

I have been experimenting with gcc version 1.36 on a Sparcstation
1 the last few days and I have noticed that the gcc produced code executes
slower than the code produced by the Sun supplied C compiler. Compilation
time is noticeably faster with gcc.

Can anyone shed any light on this? I was under the impression that gcc
was supposed to be a big win on the SPARC.

I have never used gcc on a SPARC before as we have only Sun3's here.
(Where the superiority of the gcc produced code over the Sun C compiler
code is clearly evident.) I also cannot profess to know very much
about the internals of SPARC architecture.

The programs I tried were just a few number crunching routines and
something called "drystone 2.0" which came over the net a year or
two ago.

Thanks,

Arul
