[gnu.gcc] gcc and position-independent code

I have built a cross-compiling version of gcc 1.36 that compiles code for a
'generic' 68020 system. The compiler runs on a Sun3 host (OS 4.0.1).
Is it possible to make gcc produce position-independent code? 

This is possible on the Sun C compiler, via the -pic option, but gcc seems 
to have no equivalent option.
