UC Berkeley wants to adopt gcc as its main compiler, but on the machines they use the most (the Harris "Tahoe"), gcc generates worse code than their existing PCC compiler. The Tahoe code generator is relatively new and hasn't seen widespread use and improvement yet. If there is anyone who knows Tahoe assembler and is willing to help tune up the generated code, please send me email. Probably this will involve profiling some programs built with gcc and pcc, to figure out where the time is going, reading the generated assembler code to see where it is doing stupid things, and being able to explain those things to a compiler maintainer. Thanks... John Gilmore (gnu@toad.com)
