For a few months now, I have been working on two versions of GCC. All new features are going into version 2. This includes anything designed to improve the quality of the output. Version 2 will have C++ fully merged in, will support additional CPU types, and will offer nested functions as in Pascal. I am changing version 1 only the minimum necessary to prevent crashes or incorrect output. The aim is a stable, reliable compiler. Version 2 probably won't start to be available for testing for several months. I expect there to be two or three more releases of version 1 before that time.
