CALL FOR PARTICIPATION IJCAI91 WORKSHOP on INTEGRATING ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE AND DATABASES SATURDAY 24 AUGUST 1991 - SYDNEY, AUSTRALIA The next generation of computing will require the development of intelligent databases - allowing large numbers of intelligent agents to co-operate. It is easy to conceive powerful knowledge base systems (e.g. medical diagnostic systems) with efficient access to several large information systems (e.g. databases,files). It is also easy to imagine large information systems (e.g. airline reservation systems) with added "intelligence" (e.g. scheduling and re-scheduling trips based on changing conditions or considering individual's preferences). However we require more than simple extrapolations of existing systems concepts. Any non-trivial reasoning system needs to access a large amount of data. Current research has focused on developing both artificial intelligence and database systems, but seperately. Artificial intelligence researchers and practioners need to co-operate with database workers. This workshop wishes to focus on new approaches to integrating artificial intelligence into databases. Specific issues to be addressed (but not limited to) are: - loose and tight coupling vs. fully integrated expert databases - object-oriented knowledge based management systems - adding deductive capabilities to databases - using object oriented expert database systems to perform case-based or model- based reasoning - coupling Knowledge Based and Information Systems - building real-time deductive databases. - existing AI-DB Prototypes (e.g. LDL, RDL, Logres) and practical examples - intelligent interoperability Workshop attendance is by invitation only, and is limited to 30 participants. Invitations will be issued on the basis of extended abstracts or position papers. Such papers should be at least 3 single spaced pages. The papers will be reviewed by members of the workshop committee. Decisions will be based on originality, relevance to the workshop and quality of the abstract. Accepted papers will be distributed to the participants at the workshop. A summary of the results of the workshop will be published, with the added possibility that the complete proceedings will also be published. IJCAI91 policy requires successful workshop applicants to register for both the conference and the workshop. Workshop registration fee is $U.S.65.
