Well, I said I would run some tests and post to comp.binaries.ibm.pc.d. It turns out that a moria save character is not a good test 'binary' (I didn't really expect it to be.) File is sharexe.arc UUEncoded, Compressed: 193077 sharexe.arc.uue.Z Compressed, UUEncoded, Compressed: 222301 sharexe.arc.Z.uue.Z This means: DON'T compress an ARC. File is WHICH.EXE UUEncoded, Compressed: 8813 WHICH.EXE.uue.Z Compressed, UUEncoded, Compressed: 8980 WHICH.EXE.Z.uue.Z File is GIFEGA10.EXE UUEncoded, Compressed: 13567 GIFEGA10.EXE.uue.Z Compressed, UUEncoded, Compressed: 13406 GIFEGA10.EXE.Z.uue.Z File is GIFSLOW.EXE UUEncoded, Compressed: 10946 GIFSLOW.EXE.uue.Z Compressed, UUEncoded, Compressed: 10899 GIFSLOW.EXE.Z.uue.Z File is DETAR.EXE UUEncoded, Compressed: 15090 DETAR.EXE.uue.Z Compressed, UUEncoded, Compressed: 14542 DETAR.EXE.Z.uue.Z By these results I can come to no conclusion. All except WHICH.EXE are smaller when first compressed and then uuencoded ... but not by an amount that will make an aprreciable difference. Frankly, I dunno what to say. A copy of the script that created these results is available on request.
