Could someone mail me info on where to get GIF files other than Compuserve? As is BBS names/numbers or names of groups? -- bill davidsen (wedu@ge-crd.arpa) {uunet | philabs | seismo}!steinmetz!crdos1!davidsen "Stupidity, like virtue, is its own reward" -me

To others: PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE DON'T POST .GIF FILES TO THE NET! If you want them, get them from a local BBS. If you want to show yours off, post it to a BBS. I see the .GIF pictures as an incredible waste of net resources. / / David Gaertner __/ __. , __o __/ ...ucbvax!janus!davidg, davidg@janus.berkeley.edu (_/_(_/|_\/ <__(_/_ "Drawing on my fine command of language, I said nothing."

Veteran BBS dwellers may be 'tired' of the GIF format pictures, but many of the recipients of this network have just now gotten the newly posted GIF viewers, and just like that computer is useless without software, GIF viewer is useless without ITS software. Agreed, I don't want 100 different views of Ms Tiegs' (sp?) navel, but let the kids get their feet wet. THEN they can find a BBS or join Compu$erve and "GO PICS" where there is some 2000+ GIF pictures... So, post a FEW more - not too many. After all, two-bit opinions like yours and mine are a waste of bandwidth, too. Right, David? Charles Lord cjl@ecsvax.UUCP/BITNET/WORLD

Major lack of communication here... if I told you that information you wanted was "in a book" would it help you? Not only did you not help, you didn't mail. Let me try again... I can't find anyone who even knows what gif pictures are, much less where to get them. I have check 14 BBS in various parts of the country, no gif pictures. Now that you've shown your superiority, could someone who likes to be helpful MAIL me a BBS number or other source? Thanks, I know that most people are helpful, even if there are a few who are really not. -- bill davidsen (wedu@ge-crd.arpa) {uunet | philabs | seismo}!steinmetz!crdos1!davidsen "Stupidity, like virtue, is its own reward" -me

Thats not it!!! designate various sites as GIF archive servers, then people can ftp them at their leisure. How about some on the east coast, some in middle america and some on the west coast (fault tolerance). If you have something to share allow people to anonymous ftp it!!! Not only did you not help, you >didn't mail. OKAY OKAY OKAY! Let me try again. I was trying to say to our Usenet community that I felt that BBS's (and perhaps Compu$erve and GEnie, if you like spending your money on downloading what $3.95 for a Penthouse will get you ;-) are the places from which one should retrieve GIF pictures. I was glad that you were making the effort to find phone numbers of those BBS's. When you find some, please post them. I was not trying to imply that you were doing something wrong; I was *agreeing* with you. Furthermore, I don't know offhand any phone numbers of BBS's that hold GIF pictures. When I got one of the GIF viewers, I was glad that a poster also posted a sampler. What I was afraid of was that EVERYONE would post their favorite or (even worse) their entire libraries of GIF pictures. I don't think that filling comp.binaries.ibm.pc with pictures (some of which are copyrighted, but that's another issue) is a proper use of network bandwidth. Granted that moderation will soon prevent that from occurring, but we don't have Mr Dhesi up and running as the moderator yet. And, lastly, I tried to keep my first message short. Obviously, it could have used a little more elaboration. Apologies to those affronted. Okay - So I suppose we need a new newsgroup for GIF pictures? Tombo.
