[comp.binaries.ibm.pc.d] Viruses and Run-On E-Mail

rjspitzig@rose.waterloo.edu (Roger Spitzig) (08/12/88)

Just a quick note on the virus discussion that has been bogging down the net
for the past while... If you really, I mean REALLY, don't believe that
viruses don't exist maybe I can help you out. In the January release of
the Apple MAC II disk containing the chooser function, etc (sorry the
name has slipped my mind) users where politely shocked to realize that viruses
really did exists. Apparently, a virus, created by a person INTERNAL to
Apple Inc. was sent out to prove that it could REALLY be done. This virus
installed itself and on April 1/1988 it automatically popped up and displayed
"APRIL FOOLS". It then explained itself and removed itself from memory.
A fellow employee of our company was in contact with Apple within a few hours,
they reassured us that they did not know before hand, but verified it was on
the ORIGINAL master diskettes for the product.

The moral of the story is that it CAN indeed be done. Surely all you hacks
out there are confident enough in this statement that you will not argue. For
those of you who still do not believe, contact Apple Inc. for confirmation.

One this note, I would like to express my deep abouration with the number of
responses that are posted to even the most simple EMail. Not only are the
responses quite often only repitition of what someone else said, but they
usually have meshed into them the original mail from most of the preceeding
postings. Don't get me wrong, I enjoy a good conversation (argument) as
much as the next guy, but not when I am forced to pay phone charges for
repetitive, and quite honestly, naive, responses to many topics.

I suggest that everyone on the net join with me in requesting all users to
more carefully review the reasons for their postings before sending them.
Just before that final enter, ask yourself... "is this going to ADD to the
intelligence and direction of this conversation, or only the bulk".
Perhaps, if you really feel the necessity to post several messages appended
together, many of which are still available on the net, you should consider
moving the conversation to another news group rather than the binaries
doc group.
